Ultra Violet Sterilization Information
If you are considering a uv system for residential water treatment, keep in mind that many people cannot use this method without first filtering and softening the water due to “shielding” concerns. Beware of companies who will let you add this UV technology on hard water or on water with iron or any other type of sediment issues such as sand, manganese, clay, dirt, turbidity etc. We would recommend that if you have greater than 0.2 ppm of iron or greater than 5 GPG of hardness that you treat your water before the UV lamp. Advantages of UV Sterilization over other forms of treatment are: Low cost, low maintenance, normally the only maintenance required is changing the bulb once a year on average. They require very little space and add no chemicals to your water. And they have alarm to let you know if the system is not working properly. Disadvantages are: You must have relatively pure water to prevent shielding and to keep the quartz sleeve clean. The bacteria is only killed while in the unit and it does not provide any residual disinfectant, if any bacteria were to get “Shielded” by the lamp, it would not be treated, unlike chlorination where you still have residual chlorine in your water lines to treat any bacteria that may get by. Beware of any company who would sell a UV light on untreated water. Also beware of any company who would treat your water and have the UV light as the first thing in the line before other treatment.
