Cincinnati drinking water comes from the Ohio River, Great Miami Aquifer, and the Shaker Creek Aquifer. The available sources of drinking water (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves natural minerals, and in some cases, natural radioactive materials. Source water can pick up substances resulting from human or animal activity including microbes such as viruses and bacteria. These substances may also include pesticides and herbicides from farm or home use or storm water runoff and organics including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals created through industrial processes and gas/oil products. GCWW uses the latest treatment techniques to remove harmful contaminants.

Calcium and magnesium salts are the minerals in water which are responsible for its hardness. Miller Plant water (from the Ohio River) has an average hardness of 116 milligrams per liter or 7 grains per gallon. Bolton Plant water (from the Great Miami Aquifer) has an average hardness of 160 milligrams per liter or 9 grains per gallon. Mason Plant water (from the Shaker Creek Aquifer) has an average hardness of 509 milligrams per liter or 30 grains per gallon. Hardness does not affect the safety of water. These minerals may accumulate in coffee pots. To remove them, fill the coffee pot with vinegar and let it sit overnight. Then rinse the coffee pot thoroughly before using. Vinegar will also work as a soak for clogged shower heads and faucet aerators.

Discolored water which is reddish brown can be caused by corrosion in the pipes that carry the water from the treatment plant to your home or corrosion in your home's plumbing, including the hot water heater. Discolored water from the Mason Treatment Plant could also be caused by high iron content of ground water.
