Water flows to the MDC's treatment facilities exclusively from either of two surface water supplies in the northwest hills of Connecticut: the 30.3 billion gallon Barkhamsted Reservoir, or the 9.5 billion gallon Nepaug Reservoir. Water flows by gravity through pipes to the treatment facilities in West Hartford and Bloomfield, where an average of 55 million gallons of water is treated daily. The facilities treat all of the drinking water provided to MDC customers. All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. Drinking water sources (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.
