The EWW raw water supply is obtained exclusively from Lake Erie. Operated are two (2) separate raw water intake lines that serve two (2) complete water filtration plants and pumping stations. Both of these plants are directly connected to a complex and ever expanding network of distribution lines that supply  water to all of the EWW 52,000 customers. The older of the two facilities, the Chestnut Street plant has an intake that is 60 inches in diameter and extends 17,641 feet into Lake Erie (5,100 feet past Presque Isle), and terminates at an intake crib submerged under 25 feet of water. The newer facility, the Sommerheim plant, has an intake that is 72 inches in diameter, and 8,745 feet in length.  This line also extends into Lake Erie and terminates at another intake crib submerged under 25 feet of water.

Although the EWW had no violations for excess contaminants in 2003, you have a right to know of two non-emergency issues, and what corrective measures were taken.

The first incident occurred on June 23, 2003. During routine testing of a small and low demand section of water main, EWW laboratory personnel discovered that it did not have the proper level of chlorine. The main was immediately flushed and new samples were collected and processed. All of the samples were found to be free of coliform bacteria and the chlorine levels were at appropriate levels. An automatic water main flushing device was installed, and all follow-up samples have been within regulatory limits.

The second incident occurred when the Erie Water Works was notified by the Erie County Health Department that the regulated Synthetic Organic Contaminants (SOC’s) were not monitored between April 1, 2003 and June 30, 2003. These compounds are required to be tested once every three years for both the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the year.  Although the EWW monitors these compounds annually, samples were not collected during any 2nd quarter. The samples collected in August 2003 and all previous years, did not have any detectable SOC’s. Upon being notified of this issue, the EWW collected and processed SOC samples in April 2004.  All of these samples also indicated there were no detectable SOC’s.

The Erie Water Works continuously monitors for contaminants in your drinking water according to Federal and State laws. The following table shows the results of our monitoring for the period of January 1 to December 31, 2003.  All drinking water, including bottled drinking water, may contain at least small amounts of some chemicals. It is important to remember that the presence of these chemicals does not necessarily pose a health risk.
