BATAVIA AREA GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION Persons who obtain their drinking water from private wells along the Fox River, south of the West Batavia Cemetery between South Batavia Avenue and Illinois Route 25 (South River Street), are advised to have the water tested for possible groundwater contamination, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced today. IDPH and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) have been monitoring groundwater contamination in industrial and non-community public wells along Illinois Route 25. Sampling results revealed elevated levels of vinyl chloride in wells between Route 25 and the eastern shore of the Fox River. From 1996 to 2002, IDPH sampled several private wells west of the Fox River in southern Batavia to learn if contamination existed on that side of the river. Vinyl chloride was detected in only one well. This well user was notified of the results and advised about ways to reduce exposure. Vinyl chloride was not detected in any other well. In a 2003 health consultation, IDPH concluded that no public health hazard existed at that time for residents west of the Fox River. Except for the one well, no site-related chemicals had been detected in private well water samples collected from the residential area west of the site. IDPH recognizes that exposure to site-related chemicals could pose a health hazard if other wells in this residential area become contaminated. A list of private laboratories approved for testing can be obtained by contacting the Kane County Health Department at 630-208-3801. Once samples have been analyzed, residents can call the health department for an explanation of the test results. Long-term exposure to elevated levels of vinyl chloride can affect the liver and may increase the risk of liver cancer. In 1996, routine water sampling by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) identified groundwater contamination in several semi-private and non-community public water supply wells in Batavia, Illinois. Subsequent extensive investigation by the Illinois EPA and IDPH has defined the area where groundwater contamination with Vinyl Chloride and other volatile organic contaminants (VOCs) has been detected. The surface area overlying the contaminated groundwater is roughly bounded by the Fox River on the West, Laurel Street on the North, Illinois Route 25 on the East and Bond Drive on the South and has been designated the Batavia Groundwater Contamination Site (Site). The investigation performed by the Illinois EPA in 1997 indicates that contamination exists in portions of both the "deep" aquifer (700 ft.) which is used for public water supply and the "shallow" aquifer (200 ft.) used for private wells. The municipal public water supply wells located nearest to the site are approximately 2/3 mile (3,500 feet) away from the contaminated portion of the site. The municipal water supply wells and numerous private wells, in and surrounding the site, have been tested. No contamination has been found in any well currently used for drinking water. The locations and depths at which contamination was detected vary considerably, and it is not continuous throughout the site. There may be two or more sources of contamination, but the exact location of those sources has not been identified. The source of the contamination affecting wells at the Montessori School appears to be near the north end of the site. Another source of contamination affecting wells or soil samples at Batavia Concrete, Eagle Concrete and Funway appears to be located at or close to one of those facilities. There is a large area with no detectable contamination between these two affected areas.
